Consular Report of Birth Abroad

Do you need to your Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) Certificate apostilled? A CRBA is evidence that a child who is born abroad is a U.S. citizen. A CRBA, otherwise known as a FS-240 is a document that certifies a child acquired U.S. citizenship at birth. It is issued by the Consular Section to a U.S. citizen parent or parents who meet the requirements for transmitting citizenship under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The CRBA is equivalent to a U.S. Birth Certificate.

Please Note - the discontinued Certification of Report of Birth (DS-1350) is still valid for use within the United States, but if you need your CRBA apostilled for foreign use, you will need to obtain a FS-240 (CRBA). In order for this document to be eligible to be apostilled, the CRBA must be issued within the past five years.

The child's parents should contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for a CRBA to certify that the child is in fact a U.S. citizen. If the U.S. embassy or consulate determines that a child has acquired U.S. citizenship at birth, they will approve the CRBA application and the U.S. Department of State (USDOS) will issue a CRBA (FS-240). in the child's name. The CRBA is proof of U.S. citizenship and may be used to obtain a U.S. Passport, register for school, etc.

PLEASE NOTE - Unfortunately we cannot assist with obtaining Apostilles for CRBAs. The process for CRBA apostilles must be made by the requestor, and the federal government will not permit third parties to be involved.
